Two Nigerians, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi were on the winning side with Leicester City as they joined a list of only seven other Nigerian players to have lifted England’s most glamorous diadem.

Chelsea players after defeat

Ndidi and Iheanacho became only the second pair of Nigerians to have celebrated The FA Cup win in England, after Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka triumphed with Portsmouth against Cardiff in 2008.

Before then, Daniel Amokachi had won with Everton in 1995; Celestine Babayaro with Chelsea in 2000; Kanu with Arsenal in 2002 and 2003 and John Mikel Obi with Chelsea in 2007.

After the Kanu/Utaka feat in 2008, John Mikel Obi won again with Chelsea in 2009, 2010 and 2012; Alex Iwobi won with Arsenal in 2017 and Victor Moses won with Chelsea in 2018.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will have to wait for their first trophy under manager Thomas Tuchel as they were beaten 1-0 by Leicester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday night.

It was a tightly-contested affair with chances coming few and far between in the first half, although it was the Foxes that had the better of the opportunities but the game remained goalless at half-time. Things started to open up a bit after the break though, and Leicester took the lead through Youri Tielemans a little after the hour mark.

Chelsea pushed in search of a leveler as Thomas Tuchel rung in the changes, hoping to spark a turnaround. Ben Chilwell came close while Mason Mount had a shot saved as well before the former saw a goal getting ruled out for offside by VAR as Leicester held on to clinch a historic win for the club.

Fans reacted to this loss angrily on twitter blaming it on Tuchel costly mistakes.

A fan with twitter handle @PlasmaFootball says; “Embarrassing that Tuchel still leaves out Abraham when none of our attackers can score.”

His view was corroborated by another fan with handle @irigo_m who said; “EMBARRASSING 90 MINS OF FOOTBALL. REGROUP AND WIN OUR NEXT 3 GAME TO SAVE OUR SEASON. C’MON BOYS.”

Another fan {Sir Frank Lampard’s Chelsea} with handle @ChelsMHL_ added; “TODAY’S RESULT WAS ALL ON THOMAS TUCHEL & HIS WEAK MINDED CHANGES. WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE SACKED OUR GREATEST EVER PLAYER & MANAGER FRANK LAMPARD WHO WOULDVE LIFTED THE CUP TODAY. TIME TO WAKE UP & PLAY THE RIGHT PLAYERS & STOP DROPPING MENDY!!
FRANK LAMPARD >>> TUCHEL”
